This absolutely rocked every test! I am not sure why they have it listed as '4WD' when it's 240V and pulls 2000W , but if you have a pretty solid inverter then it should hold up. Comes with a neat carry bag too! If I could make some improvements, it would just be a bigger induction coil, more rubber feet, and maybe more staged coils for efficiency or a more controlled cook. Yeah most CPUs have internal protection mechanisms to halt at certain thresholds. Besides the obvious safety, there may be internal hot pockets that far exceed that temperature, and that can lead to the silicone warping, certain solder joints softening, etc. But either way I'd never recommend a peltier on a CPU!

    I’ve had an IKEA induction unit for several years. Love it! The whole upper cooking side is glass - no ridges to clean, just wipe the whole thing. It’s big and heavy but I like that it’s so sturdy. It even has a loop built into the top edge so you can hang it out of the way. I use this everyday as my main cooking surface. Unfortunately IKEA has changed it a bit. I haven’t seen it in person so I don’t know what they’ve eliminated or changed. Glad I got the original

    PWM or analog draw?

      @platima 18 днів тому

      Uhhhh. Sorry mate? That question does not quite make any technical sense 😅

    • @damodoesall6240
      @damodoesall6240 17 днів тому

      @@platima Yeah it f does, most induction cooktops are PWM, there are rumours that this is analog . PWM is the frequency with which the power is cycled on and off to produce lower heat settings. Induction hobs simulate lower power/lower heat by cycling the power on and off.

    • @platima
      @platima 17 днів тому

      @@damodoesall6240 OH okay I get what you mean. So no, unfortunately, induction cookers cannot be purely analog due to the nature of how they operate. Induction cooking relies on electromagnetic fields, which require precise control. This control is typically achieved using PWM. In most induction cookers, the main heating element uses a high-frequency PWM, often upwards of 30kHz, to generate the magnetic field that heats the cookware. To regulate the average power and temperature, many induction cookers use a lower frequency PWM, around 0.1Hz depending on the model and setting chosen, which means the induction coil turns on and off every 10 seconds or so. This model, however, offers a more refined control compared to cheaper models. For example, a cheap induction cooker set to '1000W' might have a very noticeable on/off cycle such as that 10-second duty mentioned above, which can be problematic for delicate cooking tasks like making custards. In contrast, this model operates with a higher low-frequency PWM, around 20-30Hz, meaning it turns the induction coil on and off 20-30 times per second to maintain a more stable heat output. This is while the high-frequency PWM is still active during the 'on' cycle to create the induction effect. You can see this in my video, where my light flickers due to the current draw on the same circuit. I think I ended up moving it to a different power point and then continuing. I hope that comparison / breakdown helps you!

    @ferfrant4425 22 дні тому

    I’m usually very patience but this time I suffered watching this. I’d suggest learning how to edit a video and delete the unnecessary parts and whenever you leave the room no matter if it’s for a couple of seconds. In addition to this, you could also double check on how to take care of your cookware as you just heated it up and not even warm yet you added ice! I felt sorry for your pan. BTW, the right way to remove the caramel is before it gets cold and with hot water. No need to torture your pans like that. Anyways, thanks for the comparison though, it was pretty informative

    • @platima
      @platima 22 дні тому

      The hilarious thing is that this was over four years ago and I now own a video production company 😂😂😂😂😂😂 FYI adding ice was intentional. Some cookware will buckle from the thermal shock, some will not. Similarly, I wanted to let the caramel go cold, as I was testing how the non-stick capabilities perform. Removing it before it sets defeats the point. Since you seemingly missed the point: this was not a cooking video, it was a torture test. You'd likely love the videos where I scrape ceramic pans with a fork 😁 (PS: KitchenAid frypans are garbage - I've long since learned this)

    • @ferfrant4425
      @ferfrant4425 22 дні тому

      @@platima Fair enouygh, congratulations for the growth and improvement to a major level with your current video production company. Although the ice was clearly intentional for the purpose, IMHO it wasn’t a good pointer or even as an example for some cooking students that may not know yet how to take good care of a cookware set. About the caramel, that’s exactly what an edition is for (you probably know that by now), you pause the video, let it cool down and then continue recording to remove it. Using a toothpick and a random piece of plastic may indeed damage the non-stick layer even for demonstration purposes. Nevertheless, thanks for clarifying that it was a long time ago and that’s perfectly understandable as it’s noticeable it was one of your first videos. Keep it up then and peace. Cheers!

    What perfect timing for me, I just went to Anaconda for new thermals thinking thats all i need BUT the dune induction cooker was spotted on my way out so grabbed 1 to try at home for my camp trips away. I have to say This dune cooker is fantastic, what a time saver. I tried different pots and learn an interesting fact, some of my pots are not compatable with the EO code, so my question is, of the mentioned steel - copper - aluminium pots, is there a preference if weight is no issue and if so is the difference minimal as in time to cook or is the difference quite energy draining when offgrid (1 run 2 x 135's with a 2000 inverter and i travel solo but as a safety factor i always take my Honda 1000w generator just incase i am stuck for a few days without sunshine.

    • @platima
      @platima 24 дні тому

      Hey super glad to hear - and I agree, quite easy to use and a good price! Aluminium pots aren't compatible, unless they are steel/copper clad. If no weight issue, I'd say cast iron is the way to go! Else anything with a thick base. I really like the K-mart ones. I've got videos on both cast iron and the Kmart 32cm pan on this channel. For me, it's about the right cook, and induction offers portability and fast heating without the need for gas, but it does have the drawbacks of ~2000W of consumption and the on/off cycles for temperature control. That last bit is what the thick bases work around. Note cast iron does require a bit of maintenance, but also the $17 cast iron pan from Kmart in the cooking section does me wonders - better than my $150 one! I hope that helps 😊

    if you wouldn’t mind, I heard you mention that you’ve tested several induction Hobbs. I am almost completely blind, and have considered taking the dive into a full on induction range, but thought I’d go with an induction hob first to get used to the learning curve. Is there anyway you can kind of pull from your past experience and recommend what of the induction Hobbs you tried? Do you think would be functional for someone with no eyesight?

      Hey there! Thank you for your comment, and that is a very interesting use case. Believe it or not, my previous partner of many years was also legally blind, so I actually have some familiarity with these matters. Do you make use of a mobile device such as a phone or tablet, likely using zoom or screen reader? If so, the Tokit could be good as it has the companion app that shows you status etc. Else I'll aim to look through them this evening to see which one have designs such as raised buttons or audio indications that would best work for a vision impairment. Cheers

      @@chef-magoo In that case, whilst I've not actually tried the app, the screenshots of the Tokit app for this 'smart induction cooker' appear to show the device status and control over the cooking modes. The fact that it has just one button which is a combination dial and button also means you can always locate the control you're after, and in moments of doubt you can always long-press it (from memory) to immediately turn it off. The others have multiple buttons, and not all good indicators, so for the few bucks more I'd say this is the way to go. I actually said that in the video without even considering the accessibility features!

    1000watts on 6 that's a lotta current to boil some water no ? I have been using a small gas camp stove in my kitchen for the last few years and its been awesome, the only downfall is its very hard to cook anything slow or at very low temps, I'm thinking of getting one of these but that current draw is insane. If you used one of these for all your cooking your energy bill would be higher no ?

    • @platima
      @platima Місяць тому

      Yes and no. These will all do up to anywhere between 1000W and 2400W depending on how they are designed. This is a 'peak' though, as they control the load by switching on and off. There's pros and cons to all sorts of cooking. Gas camp stoves are notoriously slow to heat things. Induction cookers are incredibly fast. Natural gas stove tops are a fair bit more powerful than portable ones given their pressure and design. Gas though has the risk of adverse health effects, fire, etc. Induction mitigates these risks, but does come with the requirement of conductive cookware. Overall I would expect the cost of gas bottles for the camp stove to exceed the power cost of an induction cooker, but natural house gas to be cheaper. At an approximation, cooking @ 1000W for 30 mins per day every day of the year might cost $100 AUD per year. Realistically I don't cook every day, nor for that long. Personal preference in the end I guess!

    I just bought this cooker, and I was hoping I could find a video that explains the modes… the instructions aren’t clear, but I suspect the modes are smarter than at first glance. Any advice??

    • @platima
      @platima Місяць тому

      Hey yeah nah (to use the Aussie phrase) - modes aren't smart at all. Well, not really. Basically induction cookers just control their 'temperature' by turning on and off periodically, hence it's always best to use a pot or pan with a thick base. The modes on this just seem to be what the manufacturers felt was the best setting to cook that, eg: steak up high, chicken thoroughly, milk slowly, etc. I do not recall if those modes also have a timer though? I just bought another induction cooker to test from Aldi too 😅 But yeah the Dune is one of my daily go-to's now!

    • @samanthamclaren2572
      @samanthamclaren2572 Місяць тому

      In your video, BBQ mode temp setting seems to hold temp better than the lowest mode on Fry and HotPot… and milk seems to heat more slowly… not sure how. It does have timer. The modes on the right (water, milk, soup) are timer based… you can’t change the temp or power. Hotpot and Fry are power based, but BBQ is temp based. It’s odd, I reckon.

    • @platima
      @platima Місяць тому

      @@samanthamclaren2572 It is definitely odd, but having a look at mine here it does appear that the different modes also consume different power on average, so I'd assume it's still using the same PWM method. Could be worth testing them out with some milk and meat 😋

    Thank you for the review/demo. Not sure how well it would work here in the US, different Watt max (1800). I am concerned that it is too thin and might not hold up as a daily cooker. I've tried 3 induction cookers and sent them all back because of the cycle/runaway temp issue. Trying to find one that will keep a stable power and/or temp, otherwise it is useless to me.

      All portable induction cookers I've ever tested are PWM / duty cycle. It's inherent to how induction cooking works really. That being said, 50% of 800W for 10 minutes is the same as 100% of 400W for 10 minutes as far as battery/solar consumption is concerned.
